Grenades Are Coming to The Outer Worlds Seven Years Post-Launch

The Outer Worlds (the Obsidian RPG, not the time-loop game with the spaceship I never quite figured out how to pilot) is gearing up for a significant update a full seven years after its original release, and this update is bringing grenades into the mix.

In a recent announcement on Steam, Obsidian revealed that they would be rolling out some minor enhancements to The Outer Worlds today through the Spacer’s Choice edition. These updates include various improvements like typo corrections, bug fixes, adjustments to prevent players from getting stuck in tight spots, and some framerate optimizations.

But that’s not all—an even larger update is set to arrive. Obsidian has stated that on May 27th, they will release a substantial patch featuring “performance fixes, lighting adjustments, and a range of quest and gameplay improvements.” Notably, this update will introduce grenades, which are already part of The Outer Worlds 2 but were absent from the original game.

On the same day, May 27, Obsidian will also remove the current base version of The Outer Worlds from digital storefronts, making the Spacer’s Choice edition the only available option for new purchases. Players who already own the base game will retain access to it and will be granted the Spacer’s Choice edition for free across all platforms. Additionally, the price of the Spacer’s Choice edition will drop from $60 to $40 at that time.

This applies to PC, PS5, and Xbox Series players, but there are some differences for those on Xbox One and PS4. To receive the upgrade on these platforms, players must own both DLCs for The Outer Worlds. However, the paid upgrade option is being eliminated, and the DLCs will see permanent price reductions, making it more affordable and straightforward to upgrade.

So, that’s pretty exciting! The Outer Worlds is an engaging action RPG with a memorable cast, including my favorite character, Parvati, and plenty of sharp anti-establishment humor. Its sequel, The Outer Worlds 2, launched last October to generally positive reviews but had a somewhat lukewarm reception from players, with sales reportedly low enough to jeopardize the possibility of a third installment.

And a big shoutout to this player in particular:

Glad you finally got your grenades! Good luck!
