Groundbreaking banned comic “Gender Queer” receives stunning new reprint
Just in time for Pride, Maia Kobabe’s *Gender Queer: A Memoir* is set to release a deluxe annotated hardcover edition. This beautifully illustrated journey follows Kobabe from childhood through young adulthood as e navigates the complexities of gender. It’s a powerful tale of self-discovery that resonates with anyone who has felt out of place in their assigned identity.
Since its debut seven years ago, *Gender Queer* has become one of the most frequently banned books in the U.S. This is a heavy label for a comic that primarily chronicles Kobabe’s deeply personal and cathartic experiences. Experts often link the surge in book bans to a vocal minority. In response, Kobabe encourages those frustrated by these restrictions to support organizations like Books Not Bans and to back local libraries, which often lead the charge against censorship.
Despite the challenges, the impact of *Gender Queer* on its readers remains paramount. The book is a bestseller and consistently appears on “best of” lists, which has led to the creation of this annotated edition featuring extensive notes from Kobabe and others influenced by the work.
“Queer and trans cartoonists, comics scholars, and individuals depicted in the book contributed their insights and reflections to this new edition,” Kobabe shared. “There are discussions about the color design process, comics craft, family, friendship, the queer media that inspired me, and the intricate journey of self-discovery.”
Contributors to the annotations include industry figures like Jadzia Axelrod, Ashley R. Guillory, Justin Hall, Kori Michele Handwerker, Phoebe Kobabe, Hal Schrieve, Rani Som, and Shannon Watters, along with the original acquiring editor, Andrea Colvin. Academic commentary comes from Dr. Sandra Cox, Ajuan Mance, Matthew Noe, and others.
“It’s been almost seven years since I penned the final words of this memoir; revisiting these pages today, in a radically different and less accepting political climate, has sparked many new thoughts for me as well. I hope readers enjoy this enriched text filled with community voices,” Kobabe added.
Following *Gender Queer*, Kobabe co-authored *Breathe: Journeys to Healthy Binding* with Dr. Sarah Peitzmeier and is set to release *Opting Out* with Lucky Srikumar on May 5, 2026. The 280-page annotated hardcover edition of *Gender Queer: A Memoir* will be available on May 20, 2026, and can be found at local comic shops or wherever books are sold.
