Take-Two Interactive CEO Strauss Zelnick has stated that generative AI will not play a role in the development of GTA 6.
In a conversation with an outlet, Zelnick addressed the topic of AI in game development, especially after the impact of Google Genie on industry share prices, as investors speculate about the potential for AI to create entire games. “I’ve been enthusiastic about AI from the start,” Zelnick noted, adding, “We’ve always been at the forefront in this area, with numerous pilots and implementations across our company, including our studios. We’re already seeing how generative AI tools can enhance efficiency and reduce costs.”
However, despite his positive outlook on AI, Zelnick clarified, “Do I believe that tools alone can create great entertainment? No, there’s no evidence to support that, and I don’t think it will change in the future.” Regarding GTA, he emphasized that “Generative AI has no role in what Rockstar Games is developing.” He elaborated, “Their worlds are meticulously crafted. That’s what sets them apart. They’re built from the ground up, block by block, street by street, neighborhood by neighborhood. They’re not procedurally generated, nor should they be. That’s what makes for exceptional entertainment.”
While Take-Two is utilizing AI, Zelnick firmly believes it should not be a substitute for creativity, stating, “We use tools for everything we do. We’ve always embraced digital technology, including AI. What I’ve consistently said is that tools do not replace creativity; they are distinct from projects.”
As concerns about an $80 price tag for GTA 6 linger, Take-Two’s CEO aims to “deliver significantly more value than what we charge.”
