GTA 6 Launches with Boxed Copies Containing Only Download Codes, No Disc Included
If you’re planning to grab a physical copy of Grand Theft Auto VI at launch, you might want to rethink your strategy. Rockstar Games has confirmed that the physical edition will only include a download code, not a disc. This revelation comes after months of speculation regarding the studio’s efforts to prevent leaks ahead of the release of this highly anticipated title.
According to a recent announcement from the parent company, the physical version of Grand Theft Auto VI, which contains a download code, will be available starting November 12, 2026, allowing players to pre-load the game ahead of its official release on November 19. This means you can stroll into your local store and purchase a code to start downloading the game right away.
However, if you’re hoping for a disc version of this monumental release, you’ll need to wait and buy it again later. With the base version of GTA VI priced at $80, dedicated fans could end up spending at least $160 to get both formats. That’s certainly a hefty price for those looking to double-dip.
This strategy also seems aimed at minimizing leaks, a significant concern for Rockstar following a major hack a couple of years ago that resulted in the premature release of in-development footage. Additionally, many high-profile games have faced street date breaches, with copies ending up in players’ hands days or even weeks before their official launch.
Interestingly, this approach appears to contradict an earlier statement from Take-Two’s CEO, who dismissed rumors about delaying physical copies of GTA VI until 2027 to avoid leaks, stating, “That’s not the plan.”
It seems plans can change, or perhaps he considers an empty box to be a “physical” version. Launching without discs will also likely reduce manufacturing and shipping costs for retailers. GTA VI will also feature a $100 Ultimate Edition, which includes bonus rewards and a complimentary month of GTA+.
