GTA 6 Secures Eligibility for the 2026 Game Awards, Dodging Potential Controversy
As we gear up for the 2026 Game Awards, there’s been some buzz about whether Grand Theft Auto 6, arguably the most eagerly awaited game, will be eligible for the event hosted by Geoff Keighley. The game is set to launch on November 19, which is close to the typical nomination deadline. If it misses this cutoff, it would have to wait until next year’s awards, competing against 2027 titles nearly a year after its release. However, it looks like that won’t be the case.
The Game Awards FAQ outlines the eligibility criteria for the 2026 event, and it appears to be perfectly aligned for GTA 6. Games must be available to the public by Friday, November 20, 2026, at 9 p.m. PT, and for the Players’ Voice category, they need to launch by November 30, 2026. Since GTA 6 is releasing on November 19, it meets the first requirement. Notably, this cutoff is later than last year’s; for the 2025 Game Awards, nominations were already out by November 17, indicating a significant shift in the timeline.
Another factor to consider is that the critics who vote on the awards need time to play the games and form their opinions. Different outlets have various methods for this process. Some use a democratic ballot system, while others rely on senior staff to decide which games to endorse. Given the sheer volume of releases each year, it’s common for a few individuals who have fully reviewed or completed a game to influence its nomination potential.
Rockstar has promoted GTA 6 as a sprawling title designed for extensive playthroughs, which poses a challenge for reviewers, especially those aiming to gather diverse perspectives before finalizing their votes. According to industry insider NateTheHate, review codes for the game might be distributed to media and creators by the end of October, which would give outlets the necessary time to evaluate GTA 6 thoroughly.
By timing its release just right, GTA 6 is also entering a relatively open field for Game of the Year contenders. While titles like Resident Evil Requiem and Control Resonant have garnered positive reviews, there aren’t any standout favorites this year like in previous years with games such as The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, Elden Ring, and Baldur’s Gate 3. Current predictions give GTA 6 a 68-percent chance of winning, even before anyone has had a chance to play it.
With just over a month to go, we’ll soon see if Rockstar’s latest can truly meet the immense expectations.
