GTA 6 Set to Launch at 30FPS, Uncertainty Surrounds 60FPS Performance Mode

The recent deep dive into Grand Theft Auto 6 showcased some impressive gameplay captured on a standard PlayStation 5. However, players hoping for a resolution toggle to boost framerate will be disappointed, as Rockstar has confirmed that this feature won’t be available at launch.

Rob Nelson, the head of development, shared insights with a content creator who recently visited Rockstar North. He revealed that GTA 6 is currently running at 30fps on consoles during its development phase. Reports indicate that performance could evolve over time, even post-launch, but Nelson couldn’t provide any specifics regarding resolution options.

In a translated excerpt, Nelson stated that during this development period, the game is locked at 30 frames per second on consoles. He mentioned that further discussions with the technical team are needed to determine if a 60 FPS option will be available at launch or in the future. He also noted that details on resolution and other technical features, like Ray Tracing, are still under wraps, with the current performance capped at 30 FPS.

This 30FPS limitation at launch aligns with Rockstar’s history in the open-world genre. For instance, GTA 5 only received a 60FPS option with its next-gen upgrade for PS5 and Xbox Series X/S, while Red Dead Redemption 2 still lacks an official 60FPS upgrade for modern consoles.

There’s also uncertainty about whether GTA 6 will offer more options on the PS5 Pro. Even if a 60FPS mode isn’t feasible, perhaps owners of Sony’s premium hardware could see a 40FPS mode for 120Hz TVs. If not, the upcoming PS6 and Xbox Project Helix could provide new opportunities in just a couple of years.

While a 30FPS cap may be a limitation for console players, it won’t apply to the PC version of GTA 6, which is still unannounced and expected to arrive later. PC gamers had to wait nearly 18 months for GTA 5 to launch on Steam, so fingers crossed for a quicker turnaround this time.
