GTA 6 Sparks Online Buzz Over Pricing and Lack of Physical Disc
Good morning, gamers! If you’re just waking up to the buzz about Grand Theft Auto 6, you’ve probably caught wind of the pricing details. Rockstar’s highly awaited open-world crime saga will set you back $80 for the standard edition and $100 for the Ultimate Edition. The latter comes packed with exclusive vehicles, weapons, and outfits for the main characters, Jason and Lucia, plus a complimentary month of the GTA+ subscription service. Players who opt for the Ultimate Edition will also gain access to unique shops for customization (think tattoos and hairstyles) and a special side mission that’s only available to those willing to spend a bit more.
The $80 price point has been a hot topic among analysts for months, with many suggesting that the game’s expansive scope justifies a higher price than the typical AAA title. While $80 is indeed above the usual price for major releases, it’s becoming more common. Nintendo has started pricing its big Switch 2 titles at this level, including games like Mario Kart World and the upcoming Fire Emblem: Fortune’s Weave. Xbox initially announced that The Outer Worlds 2 would also be priced at $80, but they later changed their stance before launch.
Additionally, the game will not include a physical disc at launch; instead, boxed copies will come with a digital download code.
So, how are players reacting to the price and the absence of a physical disc? Let’s take a look:
Rockstar rakes in billions with GTA Online. Still too cheap to do a physical release for GTA VI. Still filled it to the brim with extra monetization. Lobbies against preservation and customer rights via the ESA.
This is what politicians suggest should be left to self-regulation.
Not at all surprised there is no disc version and just a code in a box. This prevents any leaks from happening because let’s be real, some GTA fans are crazy enough to break into disc manufacturing facilities and retailers to steal discs. Rockstar hates, hates, hates leaks.
If the biggest game of the decade isn’t shipping a disc release, that should tell you where things are going.
Honestly, I think I’d rather just spend my vacation playing the Ocarina of Time remake. This digital-only approach really killed my hype. Thanks, Rockstar.
GTA ONLINE 2 WILL BE SOLD SEPARATELY. WE ARE COOKED.
Is it just me, or is it wild that they’re locking an entire vehicle customization shop behind a paywall?
Have Rockstar just killed future physical disc game releases? GTA VI will only come with a download code in the physical box release. This type of release could easily catch on with other publishers next year. Maybe it saves them disc production costs, who knows!
Having stores locked behind the Ultimate Edition in a single-player game is definitely a choice.
????OPINION ALERT???? Locking physical stores feels kinda stinky for an Ultimate Edition thing. For individual items like clothing or weapon skins, it’s whatever, but it feels lame to lock the GTA 6 equivalent of Benny’s behind it… and its off-road counterpart.
Grand Theft Auto VI is essentially priced at $100, given that they locked a unisex salon and tattooist behind the Ultimate Edition. The game’s main draw is those customizations, so it feels like the $80 price is just for optics, avoiding a more significant price jump.
Take Two charging over $100 for an Ultimate Edition that includes entire shops, knowing that people will fork out for it.
GTA VI Ultimate Edition $100. Meanwhile, other publishers…
GTA 6 paywalling semi-interesting single-player content and shops is absolute nonsense and one of many reasons I have zero hype for this game.

Grand Theft Auto 6 pre-orders go live tomorrow on PS5 and Xbox Series X/S at midnight local time. Maybe we’ll also get a new trailer, but fans have plenty to digest today with all this new information and dozens of new images showcasing the customization options for the Ultimate Edition.
