GTA 6 Takes the Top Spot on Netflix’s Movie Rankings

After a long 13-year wait, Grand Theft Auto 6 is finally starting to feel tangible, and fans are eagerly soaking up every bit of information. Recent leaks have teased aspects of the game ahead of its official announcement, while the latest footage from Rockstar has confirmed that GTA 6 is set to be the most intense installment in the franchise. The game’s map is rumored to be three times larger than that of Red Dead Redemption 2, and the excitement has even driven up prices for the PlayStation 5 Pro.

When Rockstar showcased its latest GTA 6 footage on Netflix, it was clear they anticipated a large audience. What they likely didn’t expect was over 31.1 million viewers tuning in within just a few days.

The nearly 27-minute gameplay presentation, titled Grand Theft Auto VI: An Extended Look, debuted on Netflix last week and quickly climbed to the top of the English film charts in 87 out of 93 countries tracked globally. This impressive feat is quite remarkable for what is essentially an extended video game trailer. The showcase has also made its way to YouTube, where it has already surpassed 17 million views.

This Netflix showcase provided a comprehensive look at the game, following two shorter trailers, and there was a lot to digest.

First off, Vice City is just one part of the adventure. Rockstar has revealed that the playable area in GTA 6 will be approximately three times the size of Red Dead Redemption 2’s map. The showcase offered a glimpse of this vastness, transitioning between the city, beaches, rural landscapes, and a Florida-inspired wilderness teeming with wildlife.

The attention to detail is impressive. GTA 6 is fully embracing realism, featuring clothing that moves naturally, individual strands of hair, visible sweat on characters, and reflections that adapt to the environment. The game also seems to fulfill an old promise from GTA 5: real environmental destruction. In one scene, two characters crash through a wall, while other moments depict debris, dust, and bottles reacting to the surrounding chaos.

The protagonists, Jason and Lucia, are more versatile than earlier trailers suggested. The game reintroduces the ability to switch between characters, although certain scripted sequences will lock players into one character. Rockstar appears to be placing greater emphasis on the relationship between the two, allowing players to develop their romance or keep things strictly platonic.

And, of course, there’s plenty of classic GTA eccentricity. The showcase highlighted beach activities, scooters, dirt bikes, sports cars, skydiving, and a parade of quirky Vice City residents. You can even give a dog a hug.

With the game still over two months away, Rockstar has revealed a significant amount. However, one major question lingers: what’s the status of GTA Online? Rockstar has yet to provide any official details about an online component for GTA 6, despite the massive success of the current version.

Grand Theft Auto 6 is set to launch on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X on November 19. A PC version has not yet been announced.
