GTA 6 Will Abandon ‘Tap X to Sprint’ Mechanic, Sparking Mixed Reactions Among Fans

Grand Theft Auto 6 is shaking things up in the series with new features like refueling vehicles and a relationship dynamic between characters Jason and Lucia. However, a seemingly minor adjustment to the sprinting mechanic could be the most significant change for players who want to avoid mashing a button endlessly during long gaming sessions. While many players are excited about this update, there’s also a vocal group of fans expressing their discontent.

Recently, a nearly 30-minute gameplay trailer for GTA 6 was released, packed with fresh details. Additionally, a select group of content creators and journalists had the chance to experience the game firsthand and engage with the developers. From these interactions, we learned that Rockstar is moving away from the long-standing “tap a button repeatedly to sprint” mechanic that has been a staple since 2004’s Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas.

According to YouTuber Mikeshowsha, who visited Rockstar North, the studio confirmed that players will now simply click the left stick to sprint.

This change aligns with how sprinting is handled in most contemporary games. In many previous Rockstar titles, including non-GTA games like Red Dead Redemption, players had to repeatedly press X or A, depending on their console, to sprint. This made evading the police more challenging but also complicated camera control while running. Personally, I often found myself using my pointer finger to mash the X button while gripping the controller. With GTA 6, it seems I can finally ditch that awkward claw grip to sprint and look around comfortably.

One fan on Reddit expressed relief, stating, “I’m actually shocked; spamming X to sprint has been one of the biggest annoyances in Rockstar games. So glad they’re changing it.”

However, not all fans share this enthusiasm. Some are lamenting the change, calling it the “End of an era!” and hoping for an option to revert to the old tapping mechanic in the settings of GTA 6.

“Am I the only one who likes tapping A to run?” one user questioned on social media. “I hope you can change that in settings.”

Another fan tweeted, “I prefer the tapping mechanic for sprinting. Hope they let us customize the controls.”

When asked why they preferred the button-mashing method over clicking L3, one user responded, “Immersion.”

Others chimed in with their reasons for enjoying the repetitive button presses. “It allows for a change of pace because you can go slower or faster depending on how fast you press it,” explained one player.

“Because that’s how I’ve known to play a GTA game for over 20 years,” said another.

“I like tapping X and A. I hope there’s button mapping; it’s been a tradition to tap since San Andreas. I’m honestly a little disappointed,” shared someone else on Twitter.

Concerns were also raised about losing the nuanced speed control found in other Rockstar titles. “Terrible decision; this means you can either walk or run, with no direct way to control your movement speed,” one fan posted. “Tapping X is also more immersive because it makes you feel the weight of the character.”

It will be interesting to see if the final game includes an option to revert to the tap-to-sprint mechanic. Remember, in GTA 5, Rockstar provided an option to hold X to sprint and even included an L3 sprint control for first-person mode. It’s likely that GTA 6 will also offer some controller configuration options to customize the sprinting experience.

As for me, when GTA 6 launches in November, I’m ready to leave tap-to-sprint behind for good. I’m looking forward to unlearning years of muscle memory and enjoying a more fluid sprinting experience.
