GTA 6’s 6-Hour Netflix Exclusive Boosted Sign-Ups, But It Was Only the Third Highest This Year

Grand Theft Auto 6’s recent Netflix special was a significant moment in the gaming world, with both Rockstar and the streaming platform likely seeing it as a win-win. Fans of the franchise could sign up for a month to catch the first official gameplay footage of the highly anticipated title, and some might even stick around to binge-watch other popular shows while GTA 6 enjoyed a high-profile promotional push on one of the largest streaming services available. However, it seems the impact was more modest than expected, as it fell short compared to two other major spikes in Netflix subscriptions this year.

Data from Ampere Analysis reveals that the initial glimpse of Jason and Lucia’s criminal escapades attracted around 100,000 new subscribers within the first six hours of its exclusive run on Netflix, before being made available for free on YouTube shortly after.

The extended gameplay preview amassed 31.1 million views on Netflix, ranking as the top title in 87 out of 93 countries on the platform and becoming the most-watched content on Netflix for the week.

This performance, however, lagged behind the final season of Stranger Things and the highly publicized MMA fight between Rousey and Carano. The data indicated that over five percent of viewers who hadn’t used Netflix in over a month reactivated their subscriptions to catch the preview and explore the rest of the catalog. Ampere noted that this reactivation rate was higher than any other series or film during that timeframe.

The 26-minute showcase followed a series of leaks revealing an early build of the game, which may have dampened enthusiasm for paying to see the game early. It’s likely that many fans are willing to wait a bit longer rather than shelling out cash for something that will eventually be available for free or through other means. Regardless, putting the first gameplay trailer behind a paywall is a bold move, especially when it’s released publicly just hours later. Yet, Grand Theft Auto is one of the few franchises that can pull off such tactics. GTA 6 is set to launch on PS5 and Xbox Series X/S on November 19.
