Out of the blue, and seemingly intent on stealing the spotlight from the recent Nintendo Direct, a new Horizon game has been announced: Horizon Hunters Gathering. This title introduces a Monster Hunter-inspired co-op action experience to the franchise.

Revealed on the PlayStation Blog, Horizon Hunters Gathering is being crafted by Guerrilla Games for both PS5 and PC. Game director Arjan Bak explains that it “allows up to three players to team up as heroic Hunters to defend a world threatened by deadly machines. Combat is tactical, reactive, and highly skill-based, building on the tactical precision of the Horizon games while embracing team dynamics.”

You can check out the trailer below.

So far, two game modes have been unveiled: Machine Incursion and Cauldon Descent. Both modes will be available in an upcoming closed playtest through the PlayStation Beta Program on PS5 and PC, set to launch at the end of this month. In Machine Incursion, players will face waves of machines led by a boss emerging from “underground gateways,” while Cauldon Descent is described as a “multi-stage trial where ever-changing rooms challenge Hunters, featuring brutal machine encounters and hidden doors that offer power and rewards for teams willing to unlock them.”

Players will have a variety of characters to choose from, each with unique melee or ranged playstyles and weapons. Additionally, a roguelite system will allow for perk selection to further customize your builds.

Despite its multiplayer focus, the game will feature a narrative campaign that is “fully canon and its story doesn’t stop at launch!”

“On a personal note, this is both an exciting and daunting step for us,” Bak shares. “Multiplayer games have always been part of our studio’s DNA, and it’s where I began my own career. Bringing a co-op hunting experience into the Horizon universe is something we’ve envisioned for a long time, and we’re approaching it with care, ambition, and passion. I hope the coming months give you a sense of the scale and complexity of what we’ve been building – or better yet, let you experience it yourself in a playtest.”

Things are still described as being “early on,” so the release timeline remains uncertain. However, if you’re interested in playtesting, you can sign up now to express your interest.

The long-rumored Horizon MMORPG is officially in the works, but it comes with a twist: it’s not headed to PlayStation and is “built specifically for mobile.”
