These days, many game studios seem to be steering clear of live service games, especially when it comes to massively multiplayer experiences. For a while now, it felt like the industry was content to let titles like Final Fantasy XIV and World of Warcraft dominate that space. However, we can now officially add Guild Wars 3 to the lineup.
While details are still limited, the announcement trailer showcased during Summer Game Fest primarily highlighted the creation of a rich, intricate world. About a minute in, we catch glimpses of potential classes, mounts, and the enchanting environments players will get to explore.
Developers at ArenaNet describe the game as a “modern evolution of the MMO.” From what we’ve seen, Guild Wars 3 appears to draw inspiration from The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, particularly with its climbing mechanics. The emphasis on movement and action is a key feature of this multiplayer experience.
A beta for Guild Wars 3 is set to launch in Fall 2027, with the game being developed for both PC and PlayStation 5. Here’s how ArenaNet describes the game:
Step into the role of a Vaelwarden, a guardian of the land of Orr, dedicated to protecting the people and spirits that inhabit this realm. Uncover hidden stories and build lasting friendships with fellow players as you glide, leap, sprint, and ride through a world brimming with adventure.
Engage in a combat system that emphasizes depth through strategic skill usage, positioning, and movement—where action RPG mechanics blend with Guild Wars’ build-making, creating a distinctive combat experience.
Run, slide, leap, and bound across Orr with a unique movement system that allows you to transfer momentum between different travel modes, offering a liberating sense of movement in a vibrant world filled with excitement.
Goodbye, tank controls.
