Gundam Rogue Orbit Aims to Cultivate a New Generation of Fans

You don’t need to be a Gundam lore expert or even know how to pronounce GQuuuuuuX to dive into Bandai Namco’s latest title, according to its creators. Gundam Rogue Orbit, unveiled at Summer Game Fest 2026, introduces a fresh Gundam universe with new characters, making it an ideal entry point for newcomers, as producers Yuya Tomiyama and Shinya Satake explained.

Designed primarily as a narrative-driven, single-player action game, Gundam Rogue Orbit aims to offer a unique experience. Tomiyama expressed hope that long-time fans will find it refreshing, while emphasizing that newcomers won’t need to be well-versed in decades of Gundam history.

In this game, humanity faces an unknown alien threat, and players will step into the shoes of RE-X (pronounced “Rex”), piloting the agile Gundam Helix against colossal, heavily armored foes. Accompanying him are the charming Gundam mascot Haro “Vii,” Sofia, and a diverse crew of soldiers yet to be revealed. The game promises to forge deep connections with its characters through a dramatic, human-centered narrative.

The reveal trailer drew parallels to action-heavy franchises like Armored Core, Monster Hunter, and Devil May Cry. When asked about these comparisons, Tomiyama noted the team’s focus on seamless transitions between air and ground combat, aiming to create an authentic piloting experience.

“We wanted players to truly feel like they are the Gundam pilot, with their in-game actions reflecting that reality,” Tomiyama stated. “You’ll control the Gundam in a way that aligns with your imagination, experiencing the tension of battling massive enemies from the cockpit. We believe this offers a unique experience not found in many other games.”

He further emphasized that the core goal was to ensure the action feels satisfying, with the Gundam’s movements and weaponry designed around that philosophy. As an action-first game, players can expect some deviations from traditional Gundam mechanics.

Tomiyama and Satake highlighted that Gundam Rogue Orbit is being crafted by a seasoned team at Bandai Namco Studios, known for their expertise in making Gundam gameplay feel engaging and authentic.

“While revealing the game, we felt both excitement and anxiety,” Tomiyama shared. “We want existing fans to know that this game portrays a struggle between humanity and an unknown enemy in a harsh world, where characters face tough decisions. The human drama is something we believe will resonate with longtime Gundam enthusiasts.”

This title marks the first time a Gundam series is being developed primarily as a video game, aiming to immerse players in the role of a Gundam pilot—one of the most powerful figures in that universe. The creators hope players will embrace this experience.

Both Tomiyama and Satake are passionate Gundam fans themselves. Satake reminisced about watching Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam and Mobile Suit Gundam ZZ during their original broadcasts in Japan, while Tomiyama’s journey began with SD Gundam model kits. They both have enjoyed a wealth of Gundam stories over the years.

“Your first experience sticks with you,” Tomiyama reflected. “Gundam Rogue Orbit is crafted to be a first experience for many players, and we hope fans around the world will cherish it as fondly as we do our own initial encounters with Gundam.”

Gundam Rogue Orbit is set to launch in 2027 on PlayStation 5, Windows PC, and Xbox Series X.
