Hades 2’s new ending was developed based on player feedback, diverging from Supergiant’s initial vision for the roguelike.

If you’ve been diving into Hades 2 since its Early Access launch, you might have encountered two distinct ‘true’ endings: one featuring Melinoe and the other centered on Zagreus. The latter was introduced in a patch that revamped the finale, a change driven by player feedback to the developers at Supergiant.

“Our post-launch patch was crafted in response to player insights,” shared Greg Kasavin, the creative director at Supergiant Games. “Like its predecessor, Hades 2 was built for Early Access development from the start, meaning we envisioned it as a game where player feedback is integral to the development journey.”

This approach aligns with one of the game’s central themes: the passage of time and its impact on even the most divine beings. “Hades 2 also delves into the effects of time—exploring various outcomes and possibilities that could have unfolded, and the necessity of moving forward despite setbacks,” he elaborated.

By altering the climax, Hades 2 becomes a testament to personal choice in what you consider canon. If you experienced the Zagreus ending first and prefer it, that’s your narrative. If Melinoe resonates more with you, then that’s your truth. There’s a philosophical beauty in this, even if it stems from Supergiant’s desire for the game to evolve.

“We were mindful of these themes when enhancing story elements based on player feedback,” Kasavin noted. “All the narratives in our games are shaped by our collaborative experiences.”

Hades 2 stands out as another stellar addition to Supergiant’s lineup, capturing the essence of the original while enhancing it in nearly every aspect. Will there be another true ending in the future? While predicting what lies ahead isn’t part of the current post-launch strategy, only time will tell what unfolds next.
