Halo Remake Denies Xbox Players Early Access They Paid For: “I Adjusted My Work Schedule for This” [Update]
Halo: Campaign Evolved is now available for everyone who snagged the $70 Digital Premium Edition. However, not all players are able to dive in just yet, as many on Xbox and Steam are experiencing various issues, including server outages.
Early Access kicked off today, July 23, with the full game set to launch for those who purchased the $50 standard edition and Game Pass subscribers on July 28. This five-day head start allows dedicated fans to experience the remake of the classic 2001 Xbox title through online cross-play, but only if they can successfully log into their Microsoft account—a hurdle that some players are struggling to overcome.
Many fans are receiving messages indicating that the game isn’t available yet, particularly affecting Game Pass users who opted for the standalone $20 Premium Upgrade for early access. Steam players are also facing difficulties getting the game to launch, with some needing to disable the digital story and art book collection to bypass the issue.
“Appreciate you guys acknowledging the issue, but this seems to be pretty much ALL players who have the Premium Edition / Upgrade, not ‘some,’” one frustrated player noted. “Hopefully you guys do the right thing and offer some form of compensation for those affected.” Another chimed in, “Bro, I changed my work schedule for this.”
The Steam issues seem to have been resolved quickly, but Xbox players are still facing challenges. “We’re investigating reports that some players on Xbox consoles and the Xbox app for PC who purchased the Halo CE Premium Edition or Premium Edition Upgrade are unable to access the game,” the official support channel stated. “We will share updates as soon as more information is available. Thank you for your patience.”
To make matters worse, the Xbox servers, which all players need to log into for the Halo remake, are also experiencing instability. This has affected players trying to engage in other games, such as those participating in the Gilded Ruin Camo Challenge for Call of Duty: Black Ops 7.
“We are aware that some users are encountering errors when attempting to connect to Xbox services and features,” the broader Xbox support channel reported. “Our engineers are actively working to mitigate the issue. We’ll update as soon as we have more—keep an eye on.”
In the meantime, initial player reviews for Halo: Campaign Evolved on Steam have been less than favorable. “Login failed,” one user commented. “Cannot play the single-player game as servers are overloaded. Screw your DRM. Combat was not evolved.”
Update 7/23/2026, 3:10 p.m. ET: Xbox has announced that the server issues are being addressed.
We’ve heard back from our teams: The previously reported Xbox service connection issue should now be mitigated. Thank you for your patience while we addressed this issue.
Update 7/23/2026, 4:45 p.m. ET: Halo Studios has indicated that the lockout issue for Premium Upgrade buyers should now be resolved. Those still experiencing problems are advised to clear their cache and restart their console.
For players who have been unable to access Halo: Campaign Evolved with a “Premium Edition Upgrade” – we’re getting reports this issue should be resolved. You might need to clear your cache – Xbox hold power for 10 sec to restart, PC hit windows/”wsreset.”
