Halo’s Master Chief Voice Actor Draws the Line at AI Use: “Keep Your Paws Off My Voice”
Steve Downes, the legendary voice of Master Chief from the Halo series, has joined the ranks of prominent voice actors voicing concerns about the use of AI in voice acting. His worries are particularly focused on the unsettling idea of developers creating AI replicas using actual voice recordings.
During a recent YouTube AMA, Downes made his stance clear, expressing his disapproval of anyone attempting to use AI to mimic his voice. “That’s where we cross a line that gets into an area that I am uncomfortable with,” he stated in a clip shared on his official YouTube channel.
“I’m not a proponent. I don’t like it, and I would prefer that it not be done,” he added.
While Downes is clearly passionate about the implications of AI in voice acting, he maintained a balanced perspective, acknowledging that AI can have “many, many positive effects on not only show business but humanity in general.” However, he also pointed out that it “can also be something that deprives the actor of his work.”
“I’ll go on the record with that,” Downes affirmed.
Overall, his comments don’t represent a complete rejection of generative AI in game development. While he doesn’t endorse it, his critiques are specifically aimed at voice cloning. In contrast, other actors, like Neil Newbon, who voiced Astarion in Baldur’s Gate 3, have been more vocal, outright stating their disdain for AI and asserting that it could never replicate the depth of a game like Baldur’s Gate 3. It seems there’s a spectrum of opinions on AI in the industry.
On an exciting note, Downes is set to reprise his role as Master Chief in Halo: Campaign Evolved, a complete remake of the 2001 FPS classic, Combat Evolved. One of the lead developers on the project mentioned last October that AI serves as “a tool in a toolbox” akin to Photoshop, emphasizing that “the people are the ones who are creating the game.”
Halo: Campaign Evolved aims to faithfully remake and relaunch a legendary franchise, with the goal of growing, expanding, and reconnecting the Halo community.
