David Thewlis, known for his role as Remus Lupin in the Harry Potter films, has expressed his disinterest in returning to the franchise. He first appeared in The Prisoner of Azkaban as the new Defence Against the Dark Arts teacher and a close friend of Harry’s father.
When asked if he would consider reprising his role or taking on a new character in the upcoming HBO reboot, Thewlis made it clear that he’s ready to move on from the Wizarding World.
“I feel like I’d be far too old to play my original character now. And no, I wouldn’t want to go back into it, because I’ve had quite enough of that, sick of talking about it quite honestly,” he said with a chuckle.
“It is nice because with Harry Potter it’s kids, and kids get very kind of impressed and very overawed, and it’s very nice to make kids happy,” he added.
The HBO series is set to span 10 years, adapting each book from the seven-novel series. The first season, which will cover Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s (or Sorcerer’s) Stone, is expected to premiere in 2027.
John Lithgow will portray Albus Dumbledore, with Janet McTeer as Professor McGonagall, Nick Frost as Hagrid, and Paapa Essiedu as Professor Snape. Dominic McLaughlin will take on the role of Harry Potter, Arabella Stanton will play Hermione, and Alastair Stout will portray Ron Weasley. There’s no confirmation yet on who will play Voldemort, although Cillian Murphy has denied rumors that he will take on the role.

The upcoming HBO Harry Potter series, with J.K. Rowling as an executive producer, has faced criticism and debate due to the author’s public views on gender identity, which continue to challenge the inclusivity within the Harry Potter community. This mirrors the situation surrounding the launch of Hogwarts Legacy, which has also sparked controversy.
