Hasbro has secured the toy rights to the Harry Potter franchise, allowing them to create action figures, board games, and more inspired by the Wizarding World.
This multi-year partnership, starting in 2027, designates Hasbro as the “global primary toy licensee” for Harry Potter films, the Fantastic Beasts series, and the upcoming HBO show. Given Hasbro’s ownership of the popular card game Magic: The Gathering, this opens up exciting possibilities for crossover sets.
“The Harry Potter universe and its iconic characters align perfectly with our goal of providing a lifetime of play for fans of all ages,” says Hasbro’s president of toys, games, licensing, and entertainment, Tim Kilpin. Warner Bros. president of global consumer products, Robert Oberschelp, adds that this partnership “will bring fresh, innovative toys, collectibles, and games.”
While the specifics of this collaboration are still under wraps, we can expect interactive plushies, family board games, and classic toys that Hasbro is known for. More intriguingly, what does this mean for Hasbro’s existing brands? With their reputation for top-notch Nerf blasters, could we see wand-inspired dart shooters? It seems likely. And how about wizard-themed water blasters from Super Soaker, one of the best water gun brands? I’d wager on that too.
Though it’s early days, it wouldn’t be surprising if the Wizarding World receives a treatment similar to Hasbro Pulse’s Star Wars Black Series and Marvel Legends action figures—highly detailed, articulated toys designed for both display and play.
Similarly, it’s hard to imagine Magic: The Gathering not getting involved. Given its history of crossovers, a Harry Potter-themed tie-in seems inevitable. Expect a Secret Lair to make its way to Hogwarts in the near future. It’s almost a given that Hasbro studios like Avalon Hill, known for some of the best board games, will be developing Potter-related products soon.
Does this mean other licensed Harry Potter merchandise will disappear? Some may, but not all—it’s likely that popular items like the Noble Collection wand replicas will remain. And there’s no way Lego will lose its rights to create Potter-themed sets. These sets are incredibly popular and arguably some of the best Lego offerings, so it’s hard to believe Warner Bros. would let that revenue stream go.
The upcoming HBO Harry Potter series, with J.K. Rowling as an executive producer, has faced criticism and debate due to the author’s public views on gender identity, which continue to challenge the inclusivity within the Harry Potter community. This mirrors the situation surrounding the launch of Hogwarts Legacy, which has also sparked controversy.
