The beloved Dungeons and Dragons video game series Baldur’s Gate is set to receive an HBO Max adaptation, with Craig Mazin, known for his work on The Last of Us, taking the reins as writer and showrunner.

“After investing nearly 1000 hours in the amazing world of Baldur’s Gate 3, it feels like a dream to continue the story crafted by Larian and Wizards of The Coast,” Mazin stated. “As a devoted D&D fan, I admire how Swen Vincke and his talented team brought it to life. I’m excited to help realize Baldur’s Gate and its incredible characters with the utmost respect and passion, and I’m thankful to Gabe Marano and his team at Hasbro for trusting me with this significant property.”

Baldur’s Gate is not only a beloved game series, with Baldur’s Gate 3 achieving massive success among fans, but it also stands as one of the most iconic locations in D&D’s Forgotten Realms. This setting has inspired numerous novels, including the legendary tales of Drow ranger Drizzt Do’Urden, arguably the most cherished character in D&D lore.

Mazin, a veteran of the film and TV industry since the early 2000s, gained significant recognition in 2019 with HBO’s acclaimed Chernobyl series, which he wrote and produced. His involvement with such a cherished intellectual property should provide confidence that HBO’s adaptation will be approached with great care.

Importantly, the TV series will act as a direct sequel to Baldur’s Gate 3, rather than adapting any specific game from the series. This gives Mazin considerable creative freedom over the narrative, unlike his work on The Last of Us, where he adapted an existing story. It will be fascinating to see how he navigates this beloved story and its characters as they embark on new adventures.
