HBO’s Lanterns Unveils Key Detail About the Finale

By the conclusion of HBO’s *Lanterns*, viewers didn’t get to witness John Stewart fully harnessing the power of his new ring, nor did we see him don the iconic suit like Hal Jordan. Fans will likely have to wait for these moments in James Gunn’s upcoming *Man of Tomorrow*, which will feature Aaron Pierre reprising his role as Earth’s unofficial Green Lantern.

However, the season finale did provide a closer look at John’s unique lantern, and we now know its name.

To mark the end of season 1, series concept artist Ed Natividad shared renders of the new power battery on social media. These images offer the clearest view of the object to date and reveal that it’s called the Dark Lantern. The name carries a foreboding tone for a hero’s tool, but it aligns well with John’s character arc as the show wraps up. As shown in the finale, this power battery was forged by Sinestro on an alien world, utilizing contaminated air and water. The pollution manifests as yellow streaks of concentrated fear across John’s new power battery.

This development thematically represents John’s journey toward embracing his fear, transforming it from a weakness into a source of strength. In the comics, fear is the essence of the Sinestro Corps’ power. There’s speculation that the fear element in the power battery might lead John to become a version of a yellow lantern, albeit with a more heroic twist. The name Dark Lantern suggests that John may be more inclined to bend the rules, a sentiment he expresses to Guy Gardner. Some theorize that John might even forgo the title of Green Lantern, opting instead to adopt the name of his power battery as his hero identity. More details will emerge when *Man of Tomorrow* hits theaters on July 9, 2027.

Currently, there are no official plans for a second season of *Lanterns*. Nevertheless, series co-creator Damon Lindelof mentioned that some writers are brainstorming ideas for season 2, should it receive the green light. A potential second season could delve into Sinestro’s character, possibly leading to his transformation into a yellow lantern.

The uncertain future of *Lanterns* season 2 may also be tied to the recent merger of Warner Bros. Discovery and Paramount, which could result in significant programming changes. DC has already canceled several previously announced television projects, so fans might need to be satisfied with the story presented in season 1.

*Lanterns* is currently available for streaming, where it holds the top spot as the No. 1 show on the platform.

The new Green Lantern’s power comes with a terrible drawback.
