“Helldivers 2 Director Warns: Overpowered Weapons Could Spoil the Game Experience”

Helldivers 2 dives into the world of dictators, but that doesn’t mean you have to act like one. Design director Niklas Malmborg encourages players to embrace a more relaxed approach to gameplay – all in the name of Democracy.

“We’re starting to see a split in the community where some players insist, ‘No, we’re sticking to this power level. The rest of the weapons and gear are below that level,'” Malmborg explains in a recent discussion on the game. This can lead to issues. “As these divisions grow, it creates a rift in the player base, and they begin to clash.”

He recalls the early days of the game when players would criticize others for not bringing a Railgun to the lobby, a weapon many felt was essential for conquering the galaxy. “If you didn’t have one, you’d get kicked because they thought, ‘You’re just making poor choices.'”

However, sticking to just one weapon can make each Helldivers 2 session feel repetitive, according to Malmborg. “For you, it limits your options. You end up with a small toolbox, which can get boring. Then players might think, ‘Let’s boost everything else so I can play my power game. I want a bigger power fantasy than everyone else.'”

“At some point, we need to say, ‘The game is solid here. Let’s shake hands,'” he adds, discussing developer Arrowhead’s commitment to gameplay balance. “That’s our goal, and it’s crucial to prevent the negative outcomes that arise when balance is lacking.”

Malmborg notes that the community often only realizes this when toxicity starts to creep in. “You might find yourself saying, ‘It used to be a great community here, but now it’s just toxic.'”

In Helldivers 2, High Command may get a bit snarky about our struggles on magma planets, but at least the Killzone collaboration is making a comeback.
