Henry Cavill Developing Warhammer 40K Animated Series for Amazon
Henry Cavill, who gained fame as Geralt in the first three seasons of the Witcher series, is now diving into the Warhammer 40K universe. The former Superman actor has long been a dedicated Warhammer fan, and rumors of his involvement in an Amazon project tied to the Games Workshop IP first surfaced in December 2022. This project is set to be a live-action series featuring Cavill in a prominent role, and recent reports indicate that it will be accompanied by an animated series that Cavill will help produce.
According to reports, this animated series will be a direct spin-off from the Warhammer episode of the upcoming 2024 anthology series, Secret Level, created by Tim Miller. This anthology is known for its unique storytelling, including an episode focused on Sony’s now-canceled Concord. The animated series is being developed by Miller’s Blur Studios in collaboration with Amazon MGM and Games Workshop, with Dave Wilson, the director of the Secret Level episode, serving as co-creator and director alongside John Orloff from Band of Brothers. Cavill is listed as an executive producer, joining Miller and Natalie Viscuso, who is also involved in an upcoming Judge Dredd project.
Dave Wilson expressed excitement about the response to the Warhammer episode, noting, “The reaction was extraordinary, especially from fans who appreciated the effort put into accurately portraying the world. This series allows us to expand on that foundation and explore a much larger narrative.”
Details about the story remain sparse, but it will center on elite Space Marines known as The Deathwatch as they confront alien threats.
The live-action series is still labeled as “in development,” a status it has held for several years. In 2023, it was reported that Amazon aimed to leverage the license for both television and film, and by 2024, it was announced that negotiations had concluded and scriptwriting would commence. However, it has been nearly two years since that announcement, and there has been no news regarding casting or filming. Meanwhile, Cavill seems to be preoccupied with his new massive backyard smoker rather than providing updates on the project’s progress.
