Henry Cavill’s reboot of the ’80s sci-fi action series goes directly to streaming.

Fans of Voltron are in for a letdown as the live-action adaptation from Amazon MGM is reportedly skipping theaters altogether. Following Amazon’s upfront presentation, it appears the Voltron film will debut exclusively on Prime Video.

In development since 2005 and having bounced between various studios before landing with Amazon, this project aims to breathe new life into the classic mecha franchise that first hit screens in 1984. With director Rawson Marshall Thurber at the helm, known for Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story, the film boasts a star-studded cast featuring Henry Cavill, Sterling K. Brown, and Rita Ora.

While Amazon confirmed the film as a streaming-exclusive during its presentation, an official release date has yet to be announced. This decision isn’t entirely surprising, as other major Amazon MGM titles like Red One and Roadhouse also premiered on Prime Video. However, given the theatrical success of Project Hail Mary, many expected this large-scale sci-fi adventure filled with giant robot battles to hit the big screen.

The plot of Voltron will center around a group of teenagers who are transported from Earth into a vast intergalactic conflict, where they take on the roles of pilots for the franchise’s iconic robotic lions. As the war intensifies across the galaxy, they must learn to work together to form the legendary “Voltron,” the towering mech warrior central to the series. Henry Cavill is rumored to portray King Alfor, the former ruler of Altea and a key figure in the saga, while Sterling K. Brown is expected to take on the role of the villainous Zarkon, Alfor’s long-time rival and the main antagonist driving the galaxy-wide war.

Overall, the details surrounding Amazon’s Voltron movie remain shrouded in mystery. Despite filming wrapping in 2025, no footage has been revealed, hinting at a significant reliance on CGI. With a release date anticipated in 2027, fans may have to wait a bit longer for this epic adventure.
