Henry Cavill’s Warhammer 40K series on Prime Video adds a horror expert to the creative team.
The grim darkness of the far future is filled with terrors, making it fitting to have a renowned horror director on board for the upcoming live-action adaptation of Warhammer 40,000 on Prime Video. According to the latest financial report from Games Workshop, CEO Kevin Rountree announced that Amazon has brought in United Artists and Mike Flanagan for the project: “Having completed initial outlines, Mike should soon be moving on to script,” the report states.
Flanagan is celebrated for his work on adaptations of Stephen King’s stories, including Gerald’s Game and Doctor Sleep, as well as Netflix horror series like The Haunting of Hill House, The Haunting of Bly Manor, Midnight Mass, and The Fall of the House of Usher. His upcoming projects include another King adaptation, Prime Video’s Carrie, and DC Studios’ Clayface.
Joining Flanagan is Henry Cavill, who will star in this adaptation of Games Workshop’s beloved tabletop wargame. Set in a distant future where humanity’s expansion leads to clashes with aliens, cosmic horrors, and more, Warhammer 40,000 embodies the “grimdark” aesthetic that has captivated fans for years. Cavill, a dedicated fan of the franchise, remains attached to the series, much to the relief of those still haunted by the previous adaptation of The Witcher.
However, there’s a bit of a downside. The report lacks specifics on the project’s timeline, noting that “these adaptations will take years to bring successfully to market.” On a brighter note, the mention of adaptations suggests that the collaboration with Amazon may yield multiple films or series.
In the meantime, fans can anticipate a sequel to one of the best adaptations of the Warhammer 40,000 universe, the animated episode featured in the Secret Level anthology. Rountree mentioned that “we have almost completed an episode for Secret Level Season 2,” which will explore the Age of Sigmar universe, the less-known fantasy counterpart to 40,000. But fear not, fans of boltguns and chainswords: “We have begun work on a full animated Warhammer 40,000 series featuring our Space Marines – Deathwatch,” Rountree confirmed. “This series will be written by John Orloff, with Blur again animating, and released through Amazon.”
So whether you’re raising hymns to the God-Emperor or invoking the dark powers, more Warhammer 40,000 content is on the horizon.
