Hideo Kojima Aims to Create a New Gaming Genre, Expresses Interest in Western and Space Themes

Hideo Kojima, the visionary behind Death Stranding and Metal Gear Solid, is renowned for his innovative approach to gaming, often exploring concepts that are rarely seen in high-budget titles. He has expressed a clear desire to break free from traditional genres, stating that he aims to create something entirely new.

In a recent interview, Kojima shared his ambition to forge a new genre, saying, “I want to pioneer a new genre, so I don’t focus much on existing ones.” This mindset aligns with his previous assertions about Death Stranding, where he emphasized that it wasn’t just another stealth game. He described it as a unique action experience centered around the idea of connection, coining the term “Social Strand System” to define it.

Kojima’s influence is evident, as the strand genre has inspired at least one other title, marking a successful venture into uncharted territory. However, the legendary developer still has plenty of aspirations. He mentioned an interest in hard sci-fi settings, expressing a love for space themes, and also hinted at a fascination with Westerns and period pieces, though he acknowledges that the latter already exist.

Looking ahead, fans can anticipate several upcoming projects from Kojima. He is currently developing a peculiar horror game titled OD, which remains shrouded in mystery even for him. Following that, he plans to return to his roots with Physint, an action-espionage game that promises to deliver the thrilling gameplay that first made him famous.

Kojima believes that “things that are too comfortable won’t stay inside the player,” which is why he intentionally incorporates elements of discomfort and friction into his games.
