Hideo Kojima: Creativity is as Essential to Me as Eating
Hideo Kojima has made a bold statement, suggesting that the act of creating isn’t anything extraordinary, but rather a natural part of everyday life.
With an impressive portfolio that includes iconic titles like Metal Gear, Death Stranding, and its sequel, along with cult classics such as Snatcher and Policenauts, Kojima is often hailed as one of the most innovative game directors in the industry. Each of his games stands out for its originality, yet he downplays the significance of creativity in his own life.
In a recent interview where fans posed questions, Kojima was asked, “What does creativity mean to you, not as a creator, but as a person? And from your perspective, what is the true essence of creativity?” He humorously remarked that he would like someone to clarify that last question for him.
Kojima elaborated, stating, “To me, creating isn’t special. It’s simply a part of my daily life.” This perspective might sting a bit for those of us who struggle to meet deadlines over trivial distractions. He compares creativity to essential daily activities like sleeping, eating, walking, or bathing—just routine actions. “It’s built into my body. It’s not unique to me.”
He further explained, “From waking to sleeping, I’m always thinking. When inspiration strikes, I can instantly visualize and conceptualize. Then I just head to the office and turn those ideas into reality.” He believes that many creatives share this mindset, adding, “If creativity were taken out of my daily life, I probably wouldn’t survive.”
Kojima refers to Death Stranding 2 as his “masterpiece,” a title he reserves for his latest work, which he always considers his best.
