Hideo Kojima Reveals New Screenshot from Upcoming Horror Game OD, Reminiscent of PT!
Hideo Kojima has sneakily shared a brand new screenshot from his upcoming horror game, OD, and while it’s just one image, there’s an eerily familiar vibe to this unsettling hallway!
This screenshot is part of a larger Xbox-themed feature where Kojima and others were interviewed. Details about OD are still scarce; we know it’s a horror game that appears to be an anthology with various directors involved. Kojima has hinted that he’s aiming for something “totally different” and “avant-garde,” leaving us in the dark about the gameplay, but he promises it will delve into various types of fear, with the goal of players experiencing an “overdose” of horror. So far, we’ve seen two trailers: one featuring actors Sophia Lillis, Hunter Schafer, and the late Udo Kier reciting a bizarre twist on “The quick brown fox…” with escalating panic, and another showcasing Lillis performing a ritual with candles before a sinister figure emerges to attack her.
Given the limited information available, any new insights from Kojima about OD are intriguing. In his conversation, he revealed that he pitched OD to numerous big and emerging companies, but they all deemed him “crazy” and struggled to grasp the concept. It was Phil Spencer who ultimately gave the green light.
“I wanted to push the boundaries of ‘scariness’ that other games have reached,” Kojima explained. “It’s a single-player experience, and I aimed to make it as terrifying as possible. However, for those who might quit when it gets too intense, I’ve devised a system to help them continue. I can’t reveal too much, as it might hint at the system and get me into trouble!”
That’s about all he shared, but he also provided the screenshot of a creepy, almost Backrooms-yellow hallway featuring an old-fashioned TV and a disturbing figure lurking in the darkness of an open door at the end. Sure, many games have spooky hallways with eerie figures waiting at the end, but the combination of this unsettling corridor, the ominous figure, the garish paint, and the retro tech evokes memories of PT! (In PT’s case, the vintage tech was a radio.)
For those who might not remember, PT stands for Playable Teaser, a 2014 demo for the now-canceled Kojima project, Silent Hills. Kojima pulled PT from the PlayStation store after the cancellation, making it unplayable unless you still have a PS4 with it installed. The similarities here suggest that hallways and creepy figures have lingered in Kojima’s mind over the past decade. Perhaps we’ll catch another glimpse of what PT could have been in OD… whenever it finally releases.
