Hidetaka Miyazaki shares that Bloodborne holds a special place in his heart, calling it the ultimate expression of his unique game design style.
Bloodborne stands as a pinnacle of Hidetaka Miyazaki’s unique touch in game design, making the lack of a sequel all the more frustrating for fans.
In a recent discussion, Miyazaki expressed that “Bloodborne is a special game for me,” highlighting its significance due to a couple of key factors. Firstly, he noted that it represented “probably the most challenging development cycle we’ve had from a studio perspective.” Emerging from such a complex creative journey with the highest critical acclaim FromSoftware had ever received—until the release of Elden Ring—holds immense value for him.
More importantly, Miyazaki shared that Bloodborne is deeply personal. “I’ve imparted a lot of my own ideas into this game,” he explained, referencing the story, world-building, and game mechanics. He believes that Bloodborne is “perhaps the strongest reflection of my type of flavoring of a game that one can experience.”
This is significant praise, especially considering Miyazaki’s involvement in numerous acclaimed titles. Bloodborne has cultivated a dedicated fanbase, partly due to its status as a PS4 exclusive. There’s been no PS5 version, PC port, or even a proper 60fps patch, despite the community’s persistent efforts. The upcoming Switch 2 exclusive, The Duskbloods, may carry a similar tone, but details remain scarce, and a spiritual successor is not the same as a direct sequel.
The most frustrating aspect is that Miyazaki is well aware of Bloodborne’s popularity. In 2024, he expressed his happiness about the demand for a Bloodborne remake and acknowledged the strong desire for a PC port. However, it seems that this popularity, along with his personal attachment to the game, might be causing delays. Former Sony executive Shuhei Yoshida suggested that Miyazaki could be too “busy” to oversee a remake, remaster, or sequel, and he “doesn’t want anyone else to touch it,” leaving fans in a state of uncertainty. Perhaps 2026 will finally bring some resolution.
A decade later, Bloodborne continues to be an unparalleled achievement in atmosphere, thanks to the hauntingly vast scale of Yharnam.
