Highguard Introduces Permanent 5v5 Game Mode

Yesterday, a player named Claire Lewis made a strong case for making the new 5v5 mode in Highguard a permanent feature. Just hours later, Wildlight Entertainment took action and did just that.

While Claire may not have a crystal ball, her thoughts clearly resonated with the majority of Highguard players. The developers noted a “fairly even split between 3v3 and 5v5” over the weekend, and in a press release, they described the community’s response as “overwhelming.”

Fans have reacted positively to the news. One Reddit user, MuriloVeratti, called the 5v5 mode “instantly and absolutely far better. Like, wow, it is such an improvement.” Another player suggested that 5v5 should be the casual mode while reserving 3v3 for competitive and ranked play due to its more tactical nature. Friendly_Cowboy praised Wildlight Entertainment for their “ability to keep the finger on the pulse of the community and make changes quickly,” calling it “genuinely super impressive.”

On Steam, Highguard launched with nearly 100,000 concurrent players, according to SteamDB, but that number began to decline within hours. After just over a week, it appears to have stabilized with a 24-hour peak of 8,000 players. This figure doesn’t include console players, so despite a rather critical review of the 3v3 mode, it remains to be seen if the larger team size will entice back players who were previously unimpressed.
