Hints About the Next Zelda Adventure from Nintendo Are Starting to Surface

The first year of the Switch 2 brought a new entry in the Zelda universe, though it might not be the title that hardcore fans have been eagerly anticipating. Hyrule Warriors: Age of Imprisonment is directly linked to the narrative of Tears of the Kingdom, but it takes the form of a musou-style hack-and-slash rather than a classic Zelda adventure. Nevertheless, the franchise’s producer hints that some of the action elements from this game could shape the next mainline installment.

Age of Imprisonment was a joint effort between Koei Tecmo’s AAA Games Studio and the Zelda team at Nintendo, featuring the long-time producer Eiji Aonuma. While AAA Games Studio focused on crafting gameplay and features, the Zelda team provided testing and feedback. “We aimed to merge the strategic, Zelda-like gameplay of using Zonai gear and diverse techniques against formidable enemies with the thrill of musou, where you feel incredibly powerful as you take down waves of weaker foes,” said Yusuke Hayashi, head of AAA Games Studio, in a recent interview.

When Nintendo raised concerns, the Koei Tecmo team responded with suggestions that enhanced the project, according to Hidemaro Fujibayashi, director of Tears of the Kingdom. Aonuma added that the insights gained from collaborating with Koei Tecmo might influence the next Zelda title. “Keep this in mind while playing Age of Imprisonment, and look forward to our next Zelda adventure.”

Is this setting the stage for a Devil May Cry-style evolution of the franchise, or is Aonuma just having a bit of fun? He mentioned in the interview that his team aimed to be the first to launch a Zelda game on the new hardware but were outpaced by Koei Tecmo. “The Legend of Zelda: Age of Imprisonment is the first Zelda title released for the Nintendo Switch 2. Honestly, we wanted to be the ones to debut the ‘first’ Zelda game on the new console,” he reportedly chuckled.

In Aonuma’s view, Age of Imprisonment is a genuine Zelda experience, not merely another Warriors spin-off. From a narrative perspective, this makes sense. Players looking to grasp the full story arc from Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom will need to engage with this title as well as the previous Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity. Will the next Zelda game revisit that familiar world, or will it break new ground in the Zelda timeline? With no DLC for Tears of the Kingdom, fans are hopeful that answers will come sooner rather than later.
