Hironobu Sakaguchi, the iconic JRPG director behind classics like Final Fantasy, Chrono Trigger, and Vagrant Story, has jumped into the latest Dragon Quest game. He revealed that his username ‘Auuo’ originated from his in-game name in the very first title of the series.

On Twitter, Sakaguchi shared a screenshot of his character from Dragon Quest 7 Reimagined, admitting he “cracked” less than two weeks after the remake launched. He humorously noted, “Somehow I eventually cracked lol. Coincidentally, the in-game name that I always use, ‘Auuo,’ was made for Dragon Quest 1.”

‘JRPG veteran plays new JRPG’ might not sound like a headline, but it’s essential to understand the depths of Sakaguchi’s obsession with Final Fantasy 14. He has previously mentioned that he plays the MMO so frequently that colleagues have scolded him and even resorted to DMing him in-game when he misses meetings.

He shares his gaming adventures almost daily, which makes sense considering he calls it “the game that I’ve played the most in my life,” often logging 12-hour sessions in that fantasy realm. The fact that Dragon Quest 7 Reimagined can pull him away from his beloved MMO indicates it’s something truly special.

While his break from Final Fantasy 14 may not last long, we hope he enjoys a well-deserved escape from his endless grind.

Dragon Quest 7 Reimagined “isn’t meant to supplement or improve upon” previous versions of the classic JRPG, but simply to “represent” the game “for today.”
