Hitman Won’t Be Part of 2025’s Most Anticipated Failure
MindsEye was one of the most poorly received games of last year. Initially, it was set to feature a special crossover mission with the Hitman franchise. However, a recent report indicates that this collaboration has been scrapped, with developer Build a Rocket Boy and IO Interactive choosing to part ways on this troubled project.
The future of MindsEye, which was once envisioned as a cornerstone of an expansive open-world metaverse called Everywhere, is now uncertain. The cancellation of the Hitman mission, which was the most anticipated content for the shooter, adds to the ambiguity surrounding the game’s direction.
Interestingly, the report reveals that Build a Rocket Boy was the driving force behind ending the partnership, motivated by a desire to take publishing in-house and gain greater control over their future projects.
The collaboration between IO Interactive and Build a Rocket Boy was announced in October 2024, marking the first third-party title to be distributed through IO Interactive’s IO Partners program. The Hitman mission was first revealed during Geoff Keighley’s Summer Game Fest 2025 but faced delays due to layoffs and the need to address the issues surrounding MindsEye’s rocky launch.
IO Interactive CEO Hakan Abrak addressed the situation in an interview last September, acknowledging the challenges faced. He expressed hope that Build a Rocket Boy would be able to turn things around and regain player trust, highlighting the potential and content they were developing.
The only ones likely to be truly upset by this news are the streamers and content creators still under contract to promote MindsEye. If the “#MindsEyePartner” streams suddenly stop, it will be clear that IO Interactive was funding that sponsored content.
