Hollow Knight: Silksong to Receive Free Expansion in 2026
Hollow Knight: Silksong is set to receive a free expansion titled Sea of Sorrow, as announced by developer Team Cherry. This new content is scheduled for release in 2026.
Prepare for a wave of “sea of sorrow when???” comments at every gaming showcase leading up to the launch.
The Sea of Sorrow expansion, which follows a Mission: Impossible-style naming convention, is described as “nautically themed” by Team Cherry in a recent blog post. While specific details are scarce, a teaser trailer features the protagonist, Hornet, standing on a rock amidst crashing waves.
In addition to Sea of Sorrow, Team Cherry is also developing a Nintendo Switch 2 version of the original Hollow Knight. This version aims to match the visual quality of Silksong’s Switch 2 edition, boasting improved frame rates, sharper resolution, and other graphical enhancements. Players who already own Hollow Knight on Switch will receive this upgrade for free.
Both updates are expected to launch sometime in 2026. Notably, Silksong originally started as DLC for the first Hollow Knight but evolved into a standalone title as its scope expanded. Silksong was highly acclaimed in 2025, earning five nominations at The Game Awards, including Game of the Year, and winning the Best Action/Adventure Game award.
