Fans of Horizon Zero Dawn and its sequel, Horizon Forbidden West, have been eagerly awaiting news about a potential third installment. However, with the recent announcement of Horizon Hunters Gathering, it seems the community may need to be patient a bit longer.
The beloved post-apocalyptic action RPG series from Guerrilla is on the minds of many, especially with the unexpected news of the multiplayer spin-off. But what does this mean for the unannounced third mainline game? According to Bloomberg reporter Jason Schreier, it appears that this project isn’t a top priority right now.
A Horizon fan on Bluesky inquired whether a separate team is working on Hunters Gathering. Schreier responded that he believes “most of the studio is on this,” indicating that the spin-off is currently the main focus of development. This has led to some concern among fans, with one expressing disappointment, suggesting that this could delay the third Horizon title.
“I expected they were working on Horizon 3! I assume we can’t expect it to launch for a long time then,” they lamented. Schreier simply replied, “Yup.” However, not everyone agrees that Hunters Gathering will significantly impact the timeline for the threequel. One fan pointed out, “Horizon 3 is already in development. Forbidden West came out in 2022.”
They elaborated that AAA games typically take five or more years to develop, so a later launch for Horizon 3 isn’t necessarily a delay but rather a standard timeline. It’s likely a combination of both perspectives—while Hunters Gathering may be the current focus, a follow-up to Forbidden West was probably not on the immediate agenda. After all, it’s only 2026.
In other news, a “slavish” Horizon clone has been removed from Steam and the Epic Games Store following an out-of-court agreement between Tencent and Sony regarding the survival game Light of Motiram.
