Moon Studios CEO Thomas Mahler has shown support for Guerrilla Games as they shift towards co-op gameplay with Horizon Hunters Gathering, encouraging the team not to be discouraged by initial reactions to their new direction.

Recently, Guerrilla Games unveiled a co-op spin-off from their typically single-player robot dinosaur franchise, Horizon Hunters Gathering, which leans more towards a Monster Hunter vibe. The new art style and gameplay mechanics have sparked mixed reactions online, prompting Mahler to weigh in.

The head of the studio behind Ori and No Rest for the Wicked took to Twitter to reassure Guerrilla, stating, “Don’t worry if people aren’t on board with your game just yet. Keep your focus on gameplay and polish, and strive to innovate: Create an experience we haven’t had before. Remember: It ain’t over till the fat lady sings.”

Mahler’s own co-op action RPG, No Rest for the Wicked, marked a significant shift for his studio, which previously thrived on beautiful Metroidvanias. Despite a rocky start with negative reviews, the game has improved significantly through Early Access updates, and Mahler believes it has the potential to become a long-lasting success.

We’ll get a clearer picture of player reactions to Horizon Hunters Gathering when it becomes available for hands-on play later this year. If you’re eager to join the post-apocalyptic adventure, here’s how to sign up for the playtest on PS5 and PC.

Following the announcement of a multiplayer Horizon title, Guerrilla’s leadership addresses concerns about live service games: “We absolutely love making single-player experiences, and we’re committed to continuing that tradition.”
