Humanoid Robot Games: A Fiery Mishap and Other Highlights

The World Humanoid Robot Games are currently taking place in Beijing, showcasing what feels like the largest Battlebots competition on the planet. This event features a variety of challenges, including boxing, weightlifting, track races, and real-world scenario simulations like firefighting and hospitality tasks. Here, robot competitors get to flaunt their skills in the areas they were designed for—well, aside from any thoughts of human domination.

Reports have surfaced claiming that some of these robots have outpaced Usain Bolt’s 100m dash record. However, the more entertaining stories emerging from the games highlight just how comical these robots appear while attempting their tasks. Sure, they can sprint faster than the fastest human, but at least Usain Bolt doesn’t spontaneously combust or require a crash pad after a race.

Incredible stuff

These robots look like they’re made of tin foil and string, and there are countless images of them being carted off on stretchers.

They seem to fall apart just from standing too long and often struggle to complete the tasks they were programmed for. Take this boxing bot, for instance, which ends up defeating itself, only for its opponent to break into Fortnite emotes. It honestly feels like more effort went into making these robots show off than in ensuring they can actually perform their intended functions.

There’s a natural urge to be amazed by what human technology can achieve, much like the initial fascination with those adorable Boston Dynamics dogs. But that initial charm faded quickly, especially as critics warned about the potential for weaponization. We might have just a couple of years to enjoy the humor these bots bring before something similar happens. At least I’ll have a fresh reaction gif for “how your email finds me.”

New reaction gif just dropped
