Hytale’s creator praises the quick turnaround from cancellation to playable game: “It’s a miracle we salvaged it in just weeks.”
Hytale, the blocky sandbox RPG now under creator ownership and undergoing significant updates to become fully playable, stands as a remarkable success story in the gaming world. Simon Collins-Laflamme, co-director of Hytale and founder of Hypixel, recently shared insights on Twitter about the extensive work being done to enhance the game.
“It’s a miracle we managed to salvage Hytale,” he stated. “It was nearly unplayable. Everything was broken—camera, movement, combat, crafting, building, game loop, sounds, rendering. Every aspect needed fixing.”
He explained that prior to this, Riot Games had spent “four years of engineering” on rebuilding Hytale’s engine, which Hypixel is not utilizing, leaving a backlog of issues to address. “When you neglect gameplay, you don’t just waste time,” he added.
When asked about his feelings on regaining control of Hytale and moving closer to release, he expressed frustration. The game has tremendous potential, but the focus on engine rebuilding over gameplay features has set them back. “You lose momentum, iteration, and player feedback,” he noted. “Now, we need to prioritize gameplay and rebuild trust by delivering updates quickly.”
Fortunately, the team is making impressive progress, achieving in weeks what could have taken months or even years. “It should have taken years to fix, but we got the game into a fun, playable state in just weeks,” he remarked. “Instead of slowing down or celebrating a release, we have to keep pushing for years to make up for lost time.”
After Riot canceled work on Hytale in the summer of 2025, Collins-Laflamme announced in November that he had reacquired the game, with plans for an early access launch by Hypixel on January 13, 2026. In his post, he outlined the current strategy for achieving a workable release.
“No meetings, trust the team, push to main and pray,” he advised. “Solid vision, no prototypes. Cutting some corners, will pay some tech debt later.” More updates will come as Hytale becomes available for players.
Hytale’s owner has praised Minecraft as “one of the greatest” games ever, but he emphasizes that his own sandbox will take a “different direction,” with crafting mechanics more akin to Terraria.
