Since Marvel teased four separate Avengers: Doomsday clips back in January, updates on the upcoming MCU film have been sparse. Thankfully, X-Men star Ian McKellen has stepped in to offer a sneak peek at what fans can expect from his character.
“I don’t always grasp the storylines of these films I’m part of. But in this one, I don’t think I’m giving anything away by saying that Magneto wreaks havoc in New Jersey. My apologies,” McKellen shared on a late-night show. The X-Men star is reprising his role as the iconic villain in the fifth Avengers film, and it sounds like he’s back to his old ways.
After revealing Magneto’s intentions, McKellen demonstrated how the character uses his powers against the city. “So, I’m standing there pretending to do that, with the wind blowing through my hair, putting on a fierce expression, and trying to channel my magnetic side,” McKellen explained, noting that the director encouraged him to “look more furious.” A clip of McKellen’s performance has since been shared online.
McKellen is among several X-Men actors making their MCU debut in Avengers: Doomsday. Patrick Stewart will reprise his role as Charles Xavier, alongside James Marsden as Cyclops, Kelsey Grammer as Beast, Rebecca Romijn as Mystique, and Channing Tatum as Gambit. The X-Men will join a star-studded cast that includes the Thunderbolts, the Fantastic Four, and more.
We’ve already seen a glimpse of McKellen in the upcoming Marvel film, thanks to the X-Men-focused Doomsday trailer, which features Magneto in a tense moment with Professor X. While plot details remain closely guarded, we do know that the heroes will unite to confront Robert Downey Jr.’s Doctor Doom.
Doomsday hits theaters on December 18. For now, check out our guide on how to watch the Marvel movies in order, and stay updated on upcoming Marvel films and shows.
