Iconic dungeon crawler Descent is set to make its video game debut.

Fantasy Flight’s 2005 board game Descent played a pivotal role in shaping the dungeon crawler genre, capturing the tactical essence of Dungeons & Dragons while emphasizing immersive gameplay through intricate maps and miniatures. In its earlier iterations, one player took on the role of the Overlord, but with the 2021 release of Descent: Legends of the Dark, Fantasy Flight streamlined the experience by introducing a companion app to handle monsters, traps, and narrative elements. Now, Artefacts Studio is taking it a step further by transforming Descent into a video game.

Set to launch this spring, Terinoth: Heroes of Descent will present an original storyline occurring a year prior to Legends of the Dark. Up to four players can team up as a party of heroes, delving into dungeons and engaging in turn-based combat. Just like the board game, strategic positioning, terrain advantages, and effective use of each hero’s unique abilities will be key to achieving victory.

The game boasts a comprehensive campaign featuring 20 dungeons, with the option for players to embark on standalone quests as well. Newcomers can even join mid-adventure, making it accessible for all. Players can choose from eight distinct adventurers, each with their own combat style, and the composition of your party will influence NPC interactions and environmental engagement. Between dungeon crawls, you’ll have opportunities to upgrade gear and enhance abilities.

While the Descent board game offers a great experience, it demands a large gaming table and considerable setup time. Heroes of Descent replaces the tactile joy of moving miniatures on 3D terrain with engaging voice acting and polished animations for spells and attacks. Artefacts Studio has a solid track record with tabletop adaptations, having developed the digital version of Terraforming Mars and collaborated with Cyanide on Space Hulk: Tactics. Their latest title seems ideal for players eager to enjoy dungeon crawling together without the constraints of a traditional game night.

A demo of Terinoth: Heroes of Descent is currently available on Steam, with the full game set to release this spring on PlayStation 5, Windows PC, and Xbox Series X.
