Iconic RPG Set to Launch on Steam 37 Years After Its Debut

This month celebrates the 45th anniversary of Wizardry, a groundbreaking RPG series that has significantly shaped many beloved franchises still thriving today, such as Final Fantasy, Dragon Quest, Shin Megami Tensei, FromSoftware’s Souls games, and Fire Emblem. Launched in 1981 by Sir-Tech, this series has maintained a strong presence in Japan over the years, leading to the creation of over 40 spin-offs exclusive to that region. The latest addition is a port of the Super Famicom version of Wizardry 6: Bane of the Cosmic Forge, set to arrive on Steam in 2027, developed by D4Enterprise.

This first-person dungeon crawler was a pioneer in the series, introducing full-color graphics and more complex character creation and progression systems than its predecessors. Combat is turn-based, featuring various melee skills based on weapon types and six unique schools of magic. Like many RPGs that followed, Bane of the Cosmic Forge is rich with references to world mythology, classic literature like Alice in Wonderland, and folklore figures such as hobbits and vampires.

Here’s a glimpse into the story of the revamped Wizardry 6: Bane of the Cosmic Forge:

A hundred and twenty years ago, a malevolent lord and a sorcerer of equal wickedness united to wage a magical war, seeking to obliterate every evil force except their own.

In the chaos of battle, they discovered a powerful artifact — a magic pen that turns every written word into reality… the Cosmic Forge.

With the pen in their grasp, they began to weave terror into the very fabric of existence. However, their envy of each other’s power soon ignited a final confrontation that would determine their fates and the destiny of the pen.

What transpired afterward remains a mystery.

Now, new adventurers poised to alter the fate of the pen and the cosmos are about to enter the castle’s domain…

The Super Famicom version of Wizardry 6: Bane of the Cosmic Forge, which debuted in Japan in 1995, is making its way to Steam while preserving its original atmosphere. Dive into the tension that only classic computer RPGs can provide, featuring first-person dungeon exploration and turn-based command battles.

For retro RPG enthusiasts who don’t read Japanese, this might be a disappointment — there are currently no plans for an English localization or ports to platforms beyond PC. Nevertheless, it’s thrilling to see these classic titles, which have been unplayable on modern hardware, getting a fresh opportunity to shine.

It’s time to experience Wizardry!
