Idle Game Developer Issues Full Refunds Following Player Claims of ‘Systematic Deception’

Nexon has issued an apology for what they call a “serious breach of trust” and is offering full refunds to players of MapleStory: Idle RPG for all in-game purchases made since the game launched.

MapleStory: Idle RPG, a free-to-play mobile spin-off of the beloved chibi-style MMORPG MapleStory, generated an impressive $100 million in in-game purchases within just 45 days of its release on November 6, 2026.

This staggering figure may be linked to a “systematic deception” uncovered by a player on the r/MapleIdle subreddit on January 23. The player, who identified as a “whale,” revealed they had spent around $8,500 on the game and found that “the game lies” regarding upgrades to two key stats: Attack Speed and Combat Power. While these stats could be enhanced through the game’s pay-to-win gacha system, players often experienced a “0% actual damage increase,” despite in-game messages suggesting otherwise.

Following this revelation, other players reported discovering additional misleading or poorly coded gacha mechanics. Alarmingly, some players noted that Nexon had corrected certain inconsistencies without notifying them or providing compensation. On January 26, Nexon Korea’s co-CEOs, Daehyun Kang and Jungwook Kim, publicly apologized to players for the “great disappointment caused.” They stated that Nexon would take disciplinary action against the manager responsible for failing to transparently communicate what they termed a coding “error,” which includes the manager’s termination.

In a separate announcement, Nexon Korea revealed that players can now request a full refund for “all products purchased” in MapleStory: Idle RPG from its launch on November 6, 2025, until the refund announcement on January 28, 2026. However, players should be aware that applying for a refund will result in their account being banned, in line with Nexon’s existing service policies. The notice concluded with a commitment from Nexon to work diligently to regain the trust of the MapleStory community.

This isn’t the first time Nexon has faced backlash over misleading gacha mechanics; in November 2024, South Korea’s Supreme Court mandated that they partially refund a MapleStory player for “intentional and active fraudulent behavior that induced and exploited users’ gambling psychology.”
