Insights on the Upcoming Homepage Redesign
We’ve been soaking in all your thoughts on the new homepage. Every single piece of feedback has been noted — from the encouraging shout-outs to the more critical takes, the “this is awesome” to the “please change this now,” along with bug reports, feature suggestions, and yes, the ongoing demand for dark mode. We truly appreciate it.
Many of you took the time to provide detailed insights right after the launch, and that kind of input is invaluable. It helps us gauge how the experience is resonating, identify issues, and categorize your feedback into a few key areas. We want to be transparent about how we’re addressing these categories.
**Category 1: Yes, we need to fix that.** Some feedback highlights clear issues that need our attention, like bugs and rough spots. Here’s what we’ve tackled:
* The scrollbar visibility on the feed (✅ Fixed)
* Adding a “Read More” option for story groups when there’s more to explore (✅ Fixed)
* Implementing a way to read more from a category at the bottom of the page (✅ Fixed)
**Category 2: This is worth exploring.** Some feedback points to areas that deserve further investigation. These recurring requests may indicate a broader need, even if the exact solution isn’t what we end up implementing.
* The presentation and interaction with the Latest feed, especially for those who enjoy the pure chronological feed.
* Dark mode. We’re actively working on this.
* Dates on stories in curated sets. We intentionally removed them to bring older stories back into the spotlight, especially when they add context to current topics. We understand the frustration and are considering how to address this.
* The ability to mark stories as read or unread. This is a common request that highlights the need for more personalized homepage experiences. We’re planning for this, even if it’s not on the immediate roadmap.
**Category 3: Not right now.** Some feedback includes ideas we’re not ready to pursue at the moment. This isn’t due to the quality of the suggestions, but rather the need to be strategic about what we can realistically support.
* Free-to-Read and Subscriber Perks sections. We’ve put these on hold for now but will revisit them if it makes sense in the future.
* The page structure. We’ve seen strong opinions about merging curated stories with the firehose feed. We believe in this approach and want to give it time before making any major structural changes. Some of you love the mix; others don’t, and that’s perfectly fine.
I want to be upfront about our capacity. We’re a small team, and every decision must be balanced against time, resources, complexity, editorial needs, business priorities, and our long-term vision. We can’t act on every suggestion, even if we think it’s a great idea.
We’ll address what needs fixing and delve into the themes that matter most. We’ll continue to prioritize and navigate trade-offs and constraints. Most importantly, we’ll keep you updated on what we’re learning along the way. Please keep the feedback coming.
