Insta360 Unveils New Single-Lens Camera Competing with Osmo Pocket, Now Available in the US
Insta360 has made waves this year with the launch of the Luna Ultra, its first compact steadycam featuring dual lenses, beating DJI to the punch. Now, the company has introduced a more streamlined Pro model that opts for a single lens but brings a standout feature: the ability to shoot vertical video in 4K. Plus, unlike DJI’s Osmo Pocket 4, it’s available for purchase in the US.
At its core, the Luna Pro is essentially an Ultra with the telephoto lens removed. It retains the same 1-inch-type 8K sensor found in the Ultra’s main camera and sports a similar design, including a detachable 2-inch touchscreen that also functions as a remote. The battery life remains at four hours, and it includes an NFC tag for faster file transfers. The Pro is slightly smaller and lighter due to the absence of the second lens, but that’s the extent of the changes.
One significant upgrade in the Pro is its ability to utilize the 8K sensor for recording 4K vertical video at 30fps. In contrast, the Luna Ultra—and both of DJI’s Osmo Pocket 4 and 4P models—are limited to 3K resolution when shooting in portrait mode, which often forces users to hold the gimbal sideways to capture the desired footage. It’s great to see the Pro address this limitation, and Insta360 has confirmed that this feature will also be added to the Luna Ultra via a firmware update expected on September 20th.
The Luna Pro is now available in the US for $599.99, while the Luna Ultra is priced at $769.99. In Europe, the Pro starts at £469 / €529, slightly above the £429 / €479 for the DJI Osmo Pocket 4, which is currently unavailable in the US due to a ban on the company.
Update, September 11th: Confirmation added that the Luna Ultra will receive a firmware update to enable 4K vertical video.
