Is a new Xbox user interface on the horizon from Microsoft?

During the Xbox keynote at the Game Developers Conference in March, Microsoft unveiled a “consistent” user interface (UI) across handhelds, consoles, and cloud gaming. Initially, it was tough to discern any significant changes from the event’s videos and photos, but a new video of the keynote released today offers a clearer view.

Jason Ronald, VP of next generation at Xbox, highlighted the UI while addressing player feedback about the “fragmentation within the experience” across different devices and the need for a more unified look. “What the team has been doing behind the scenes is a lot of work to deliver a consistent experience, so it feels very familiar and distinctly Xbox no matter where you’re choosing to play,” Ronald explained.

At first glance, the UI appears similar to the current version, but there are subtle variations across devices. The Xbox console homescreen has a slightly altered layout, featuring the user profile in the top right corner and three ad slots at the bottom instead of the usual four. The handheld version mirrors this interface, while the PC app resembles the new Xbox Cloud Gaming layout.

When Microsoft began testing the new Xbox Cloud Gaming UI, it was noted for its console-like feel, enhanced by new animations, a dedicated library section, and a rounded design. Ronald hinted that this interface might also be integrated into the Xbox PC app, although he clarified that the UI will not be identical across all Xbox devices due to considerations like screen size and input methods.

Additionally, the Xbox game dev update video showcased what seems to be a revamped Xbox store on Windows. Inquiries about the new Xbox UI and store changes were met with no comment from Microsoft.

For those interested in Ronald’s complete GDC keynote, it’s worth checking out the video, which runs nearly 90 minutes, with the embed starting at his segment.
