Is GTA 6 Coming to Switch 2? Nintendo’s President Suggests Asking Rockstar

Grand Theft Auto 6 is shaping up to be the most eagerly awaited game release in history, but it won’t be making its way to the Switch 2 at launch, or possibly ever. When asked about the chance of a future port, the president of Nintendo of America indicated that the decision lies with the developers.

“That’s going to be a conversation for Take Two and Rockstar, but nothing to announce on my end at this time,” she mentioned in a recent interview. Not only is the Switch 2 the only major console missing out on GTA 6 this fall, but it’s also set to host a first-party exclusive that will compete directly with Rockstar’s massive open-world title. The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time remake is set to drop just two weeks earlier on November 5.

While it remains uncertain if the Switch 2 can handle GTA 6, there are still other Rockstar titles that could potentially make their way to Nintendo’s latest console. Red Dead Redemption 2 has yet to be released on the hybrid system, despite being available on the previous generation PlayStation 4 and Xbox Series X/S. Similarly, GTA 5 has not seen a port either.

Virtuous, the studio that brought L.A. Noire to the Switch, has expressed interest in tackling this challenge. “[The] team is eager to adapt Grand Theft Auto 5 and Red Dead Redemption 2 for the Nintendo Switch,” said their technical director. “We’re personally big fans and believe these games can shine again on the Switch, delighting even more players.”

These open-world titles are among only four of the best-selling games of all time that aren’t available on the Switch 2, alongside PUBG and Wii Sports. A successor to the latter, Nintendo Switch Sports Resort, is set to launch on October 22.

The case for Rockstar to bring GTA 5 to the Switch 2 is strengthened by the ongoing popularity of GTA Online, with no plans for it to be phased out anytime soon. For Switch 2 enthusiasts hoping for some Vice City action this November, there’s always Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition, which is available on Nintendo’s console.
