“It: Welcome to Derry creator clarifies that the finale’s fog isn’t linked to Stephen King’s The Mist, then reveals the surprising connections.”

Throughout its eight-episode journey, *It: Welcome to Derry* has been packed with Easter eggs, many of which reference the original novels and pay homage to Stephen King’s broader universe, including works like *Carrie* and *The Shawshank Redemption*.

In the finale, as General Shaw and the military force It out of its 27-year slumber, a thick fog envelops the town. This mist bears a striking resemblance to the eerie atmosphere in King’s 1980 thriller *The Mist*, where protagonist David Drayton must take refuge from terrifying creatures lurking in the shadows of a supermarket. However, in a recent interview, director Andy Muschietti clarified that this fog is “not” a direct reference to that story, even though it shares some connections.

“Of course, in *The Mist*, they mention that the mist originates from the Todash Field, the same interdimensional realm that It hails from,” he explained, adding to the intrigue. “So it’s unrelated, but it’s also related.”

Muschietti aimed to use the fog to visually represent the expansion of the clouds surrounding the Dead Lights. In episode 4, when the meteor crashes into Derry, viewers see the three Dead Lights swirling around this fog. “The physical element is established there, and for this story, I wanted to show that it is an expansive force,” he noted.

While *It: Welcome to Derry* season 2 hasn’t been officially confirmed, it seems highly likely that more episodes are on the horizon. After the finale, Muschietti shared his vision for a three-season arc, revealing that the next chapter will revisit some familiar characters, albeit in their younger forms.

“It takes place during the Depression in Derry, and there are some new characters along with younger versions of characters from this season,” he explained.

*It: Welcome to Derry* is currently available for streaming.
