It’s Time to Move On from Reviving The Powerpuff Girls

Like many of you, I grew up watching The Powerpuff Girls and loved its quirky villains, hilarious running gags, and clever satire that I was just starting to grasp. The show was a shining example of great animation, but it wrapped up in 2005 after a decline in quality following creator Craig McCracken’s departure. Since then, there have been a few spin-offs, none of which captured the original magic, and its fanbase has matured into adulthood. Essentially, The Powerpuff Girls has been in the rearview mirror for quite a while.

So, it’s no surprise that some folks are eager to resurrect this classic cartoon in a misguided effort to cash in on nostalgia, a trend that seems to be the norm for beloved franchises from the ’80s, ’90s, and early ’00s. This time, Warner Bros. has stepped up, announcing at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival that a new Powerpuff Girls film is in the works.

However, reports indicate that there’s no actual deal in place for this film yet. There’s no script, no green light, no plot, no cast—essentially, no real details at all. It feels like no one has a solid vision for reviving The Powerpuff Girls. Warner Bros. seems more interested in leveraging an existing IP for profit rather than creating something meaningful. What a fantastic motivation for artistic expression, right?

We’ve seen this play out before, both with IP revivals in general and specifically with The Powerpuff Girls. The series had a revival in 2016 that was lackluster at best and ended after three seasons in 2019. A second revival attempt, this time with McCracken’s involvement, was announced in 2022, but there’s been nothing but silence since, raising questions about its viability. And let’s not even get started on the poorly received live-action revival that The CW canceled before it even aired.

At this point, I feel like a broken record every time a major entertainment company tries to breathe life into a long-dead franchise just to squeeze out a few more dollars. But here I am again: leave The Powerpuff Girls alone! Nothing good can come from this! The original series was fantastic and meaningful for many, and it’s perfectly fine to let things come to a close. Honestly, I struggle to believe that anyone has fresh ideas for this nearly two-decade-old series that are compelling enough to justify a comeback. We’ve already seen Bubbles go hardcore, Ms. Keane date Professor Utonium, and Mojo Jojo save the day (again and again). We’re good!

I’m pleading with the entertainment industry to stop recycling the same stories endlessly. I’m worn out. Please invest in new creators with original ideas and spare me from ever having to utter the phrase “intellectual property” again.
