James Gunn assures fans that Supergirl will break the mold.
After catching our first glimpse of Supergirl in the latest trailer, it’s clear that Kara Zor-El (Milly Alcock) has a vibe that feels perfectly suited for jamming out to one of Star-Lord’s Awesome Mixes from the Guardians of the Galaxy series. However, fans familiar with the Tom King comic that inspired the film know there’s much more depth to this teenage Kryptonian. The real question is how much of that will make it onto the big screen.
In a recent appearance on a podcast, Superman director and DC Studios co-head James Gunn shared that the upcoming film won’t be a strict adaptation of Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow. While this might be a letdown for some, Gunn promises that fans are in for an exciting ride with the Girl of Steel at the forefront.
“I love Millie Alcock in the movie, and I think it’s a space fantasy, which is like ‘Guardians’ in a way,” Gunn explained. “It’s based on the Tom King book, but it doesn’t follow it religiously. It retains a lot of the core elements, and I’m really excited for people to see it and to see Millie. It’s going to be awesome.”
This aligns with what we’ve seen in the recent preview. Notably, the film will introduce Lobo (Jason Momoa), a character who wasn’t part of the original story. Additionally, thanks to Bilquis Evely’s stunning artwork, the film’s antagonist, Krem of the Yellow Hills, comes across as more cavalier in the comic, while the version we’ve glimpsed, played by Matthias Schoenaerts, has a more intense look.
What will remain consistent is Kara’s self-destructive tendencies, shaped by the trauma of Krypton’s destruction and the loss of her family—experiences her cousin, Kal-El (David Corenswet’s Superman), was too young to endure. The film will explore how she copes with this while embarking on a True Grit-style mission alongside a young girl named Ruthye, who is on a quest to find her father’s killer. Fans will have to wait until Supergirl hits theaters on June 26, 2026, to see if they succeed in their search.
