James Gunn describes his role as director and head of DC Studios as a level of “madness” that even Walt Disney would shy away from, revealing he initially declined the position because he didn’t want to replicate Kevin Feige’s approach.
James Gunn has made quite an impact as co-CEO of DC Studios and as the director of last summer’s hit Superman, which many consider a top contender for movie of the year. However, Gunn himself admits that he nearly turned down the role and is uncertain about the long-term viability of balancing both filmmaking and studio leadership.
“I don’t think it’s ever really been done. Even Walt Disney was more of a producer than a director. It’s an experiment. And yes, sometimes it probably sounds like madness—especially since I don’t make the most conventional films,” Gunn shared. “But I love big spectacle. That’s my jam. I originally said no to the job. I didn’t want to do what Kevin Feige does. But once [co-CEO Peter Safran] and I realized we’d be doing it together, it became exciting. I still don’t know if it’s sustainable long-term. It’s a lot. There just aren’t enough hours in the day.”
Fans of DC Studios can breathe easy knowing that Gunn’s vision for the movie and TV franchise stretches well into the future. It’s more likely that he may take a step back from directing his own projects to concentrate on his executive responsibilities.
Gunn’s next directorial venture is the 2027 film Man of Tomorrow, a sequel to Superman that sees the hero teaming up with his nemesis Lex Luthor to confront the alien threat Brainiac, who has just been cast. Before that, Supergirl is set to hit theaters on June 26, followed by Clayface on September 11.
