James Gunn Provides Update on the Future of Batman and The Flash in the DC Universe

If you’re keen on staying updated about the latest happenings in DC’s cinematic universe, you might want to check out Threads, the social media platform where DC Studio head James Gunn frequently engages with fans. Recently, he shared some intriguing insights about the future of some of the most awaited characters in the DC Universe.

When a fan inquired whether Batman’s suit would share a similar texture to Superman’s, Gunn revealed that the design for Batman’s suit hasn’t even been created yet. This highlights just how far off the Caped Crusader’s debut in the DCU might be. While there’s a chance Bruce Wayne could make a cameo in next year’s Man of Tomorrow without his suit, that seems unlikely. We may need to wait for The Brave and the Bold to progress further in development before we get a clearer picture of Batman’s look.

Gunn also managed expectations regarding Wally West’s introduction into the DCU. When asked if the character, better known as the Flash, is currently active in the universe, Gunn replied, “Who knows?” It’s interesting that he would be the one with the answers, leading fans to speculate that he might be dodging the question. Although there are no current announcements for a Flash project, the character’s popularity suggests he will eventually make an appearance.

Man of Tomorrow, the sequel to 2025’s Superman, is set to bring back several familiar faces. One of the most exciting confirmations is Xolo Maridueña, who will reprise his role as Jaime Reyes/Blue Beetle from the 2023 film. His return hints that the movie may be considered part of the new DCU, even though it’s one of the last entries in the DC Extended Universe. Gunn clarified that while Blue Beetle is coming back, it doesn’t necessarily mean the film itself is canon. He also mentioned that 2022’s Black Adam is not part of the canon, which wasn’t a surprise to many.

As for future projects, Gunn currently has nothing lined up to direct after Man of Tomorrow, sparking fan theories about what his next DC film might be. However, we do know it won’t be a live-action Teen Titans movie, as Gunn has already dismissed that idea in response to a fan. With numerous confirmed projects on the horizon, there’s plenty for fans to look forward to.
